Hang 106 FM, a radio station in Batam, Indonesia has been cleared of the allegation of spreading ISIS propaganda by the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).

It is one of nine religion-based stations in the Riau Islands province, and one of hundreds across Indonesia. 

KPI conducted a review of the content aired by the station and found no evidence that it was airing radical Islamic teachings.

It said that Hang FM had changed its method of propagating Islam, adding that it is now more open, does not promote radical teachings anymore and had repeatedly denounced terrorism in its programmes.

The radio station came under the scrutiny of Singapore authorities after two of its avid listeners, Singaporeans Rosli Hamzah, 50, and Mohamed Omar Mahadi, 33, were detained under the Internal Security Act in August last year for allegedly trying to join ISIS in Syria.

The city-state’s Ministry of Home Affairs alleged that they both started listening to Hang FM between 2009 and 2010, after which they became interested in “armed jihad”.

The had also said that Radio Hang FM “is a religious station which sometimes features speakers who preach extreme views”, and authorities were looking at options to block it.

Radio Hang FM founder Zein Alatas said his station has since banned controversial hard line clerics and remains committed to the eradication of radicalism in Indonesia.
