DAB+ is taking off across the Arab States

Delegates attending a two-day DAB+ demo and workshop in Amman Jordan, co-organised by WorldDAB and Arab States Broadcasting Union (SBU), and hosted by Jordan Radio TV (JRTV) and the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC), heard about the extent of deployment of DAB+ across the Arab region.

Over 50 stakeholders from across the Jordanian radio industry heard about all aspects of DAB+ deployment, and in a highly interactive session discussed how DAB+ is relevant to the radio sector in Jordan, offering an opportunity to address the issues of FM congestion, as well as signal interference from neighbouring countries, on top of the usual benefits of digitising radio (digital sound quality, more choice, less cost etc).

The status of DAB+ deployment across the Arab States was presented by the Director of Technology at ASBU, Bassil Zoubi.

Next steps for Jordan are the formation of a national committee for digital radio and the development of a DAB+ deployment plan. Getting cars imported with DAB+ will be a key element of that plan, given that radio listening happens mostly in-car.
