Fly FM scraps prank call segment after listeners’ feedback

Malaysia’s English language station Fly FM has ended its prank call segment Krappi Call after feedback from the listeners who emphatically turned it down, many of them even finding it irritating.

The segment, which had been running for eight years, was a part of the station’s popular morning show, hosted by deejays Hafiz, Guibo and RD.

The move was made following a 24-hours social media poll by the hosts on February 12, in which they asked their followers whether they should keep the segment going or let it go.

In the end, a resounding 80% of 2,174 votes went to ‘Bye Bye Krappi Call’, and a few hours later, the segment was officially called off.

Fly FM’s Head of Content Shiva Ruppeni Sivarajanesan said in a statement: “Prank calls have long been an anchor feature for the radio industry and still have a following. This format was started in the 90s and during then, listeners did enjoy the humour however as we now progress into a more inclusive society, many now describe it as bullying and harassment which are morally unacceptable.”

“As an audience-focused brand, it’s important to constantly provide them a platform for their feedback so we are able to create and curate better content for them. We appreciate the feedback that we received. So, based on the results of the poll, we finally chose to pull the plug on them and focus on more positive content,” said Shiva.
