Mirchi’s ‘Kiss of Love’ stopped in Delhi

An event by Indian station Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM called ‘Kiss of Love Wall’ was cancelled at the last moment in Delhi last weekend, reports The Times of India.

The station had planned the activity in a mall after bring inspired by the ‘Kiss of Love’ campaign which started in Kochi in the southern state of Kerala.

At Kochi, the event featured a number of couples kissing in public to assert their right of expression.

According to Radio Mirchi, its event was to “express solidarity with those demanding right of expression,” but a right-wing group called Hindu Sena objected to it.

When a team went to the mall to set up the fabrications for the event, the mall management told them they couldn’t as they didn’t have the necessary permissions.

Station officials tried to talk to the police but the event was scuttled “unofficially but firmly”, as the company told TOI there was no denial of permission on paper.

The police deny stopping the event and the mall authorities blame the event management company while Hindu Sena says it had asked the police to take action and they cancelled permission for the event.

Radio Mirchi’s Delhi Programming Head Akash Banerjee said: “We weren’t asking people to come and kiss each other but just show solidarity. If we can’t do that in the national capital, we’re heading for very dangerous times.”
