Philippines: Radio broadcaster shot dead

Edmund Sestoso, a radio broadcaster in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, Philippines, died from wounds he sustained, a day after he was shot by motorcycle-riding gunmen.

Sestoso, 51, hosted the daily morning show ‘Tug-anan’ on dyGB 91.7 FM.

He was coming out of the station’s building after finishing his show around 10 am, when he was shot multiple times from close range.

Sestose, a former Dumaguete City chapter chairman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), covered issues involving the left-leaning groups in Negros Oriental.

The incident alarmed local journalists since the shooting appears to be job-related.

Police are still probing the incident, and have yet to determine the motive of the killing.

In an official statement, Dumaguete Press Club president Juancho Gallarde said he condemns the shooting “in the highest possible terms”.

“This is an affront to press freedom. Everybody, not just members of the fourth estate should be worried about [this] because of its implications. If we are silenced, who would take the cudgels of bringing to fore ills in government as well as the illegals?” he said.
