DAB digital radio sales reach 75 million worldwide

WorldDAB's latest market report reveals that by the end of Q4 2018, over 75 million consumer and automotive DAB/DAB+ receivers had been sold in Europe and Asia Pacific – up from 65 million in Q4 2017.


The new data published by WorldDAB draws on multiple sources to give a comprehensive overview of the latest statistics on DAB receiver sales, road and population coverage, household penetration and the number of national stations on DAB/DAB+ compared to FM.

Europe mandates compulsory digital radios in cars

Europe has mandated that all new cars sold within the EU will now be required to have digital radios.

Car manufacturers have two years to comply with the new directive, that was ratified just before Christmas.

Meanwhile, in France, digital radio penetration has reached a point where it has triggered a law requiring that by the end of 2019, all new consumer radios to include DAB+.

EU Parliament backs digital radio in cars

The European Parliament in its Plenary session voted to adopt the new European Electronic Communications Code. This Directive will require all new car radios in the EU to be capable of receiving digital terrestrial radio. This requirement is in addition to any FM or AM functionality which manufacturers may wish to include.

WorldDAB establishes new Aftermarket Devices Working Group

WorldDAB has created a new Working Group, focused on the performance and user experience of aftermarket devices for DAB+ in the car.


The Aftermarket Devices Working Group (ADWG) brings together broadcasters, device and antenna manufacturers, plus experts from the automotive industry, in an important collaboration for digital radio in the car.

The chairman of the group is Jørn Jensen, a Senior Advisor at NRK who was closely involved in helping Norwegian drivers convert to digital in the recent digital switchover.
