Fly FM scraps prank call segment after listeners' feedback

Malaysia’s English language station Fly FM has ended its prank call segment Krappi Call after feedback from the listeners who emphatically turned it down, many of them even finding it irritating.

To celebrate World Radio Day (WRD) on Friday, Fly FM Malaysia’s aired a live broadcast of its presenters Ben & Hafiz broadcast with Ash, Kip & Luttsy of NOVA 106.9 in Brisbane, Australia.

The Media Prima Berhad owned Fly FM is the second most popular English radio station in Malaysia, and plays both English and Malay music.

Ben Jern and Hafiz Mohd Hatim host the station’s breakfast show  on weekdays from 6 am to 10 am.

Media Prima Radio Q3 earnings steady

Malaysia’s Media Prima's three radio stations saw net year-to-date advertising revenues fall by one percent, according to a financial statement by the company.

Figures for Q1, 2 and 3 showed revenues of $15.6 million (RM 52.3 million)

But profit after tax from radio fell by 11 percent year-on-year, from to $6.7 million (RM 22.4 million).

Separate figures from Nielsen showsed Chinese station ONE FM increased its portion of radio adspend rise 16 percent to 8.97 percent.  Malay station Hot FM and the English language Fly FM saw their adspend shares fall.

Fly FM's mashups to bring drive alive

A new Electronic Dance Music (EDM) features is being heavily promoted on Malaysia's Fly FM at the moment.

‘Slashup Mashup’ is a weekday evening segment which plays at 6 pm during the evening show '4-8 With Zher'.

In the segment, DJ Zher plays out a mashup of two popular EDM songs, remixed by Malaysian DJ/producer duo Simon Lee & Alvin.

So far, the segment has featured artists like Ellie Goulding, David Guetta, Avicii, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Capital Cities and Zedd, and many more.

Media Prima stations claim largest Social Media presence

Media Prima Radio Networks, which owns Fly Fm, Hot FM and One FM, has claimed the largest social media presence for radio in Malaysia.

Although overall listenership of the stations declined year-on-year between April and June, its online fan following has grown higher than its competitors, it said in its Investor Report for the first quarter of the year

Together, the three group stations had the highest number of followers on Facebook at 2.86 million.

Malaysia's Media Prima Radio Networks saw listenership fall in the most recent Nielsen audience research.

The figures were released publicly in an investor presentation for the parent company's first half 2014 financial results.

According to diary research carried out in April this year, Media Prima's Chinese station ONE FM saw a three percent increase in listenership to 946,000.

But Malay station Hot FM, which makes up almost 70 percent of total listenership for the company saw its audience fall around 13 percent to 3.42 million.

Radio revenues at Media Prima up 5 percent

Malaysia's Media Prima Radio Networks saw 2014 first half gross revenue climb five percent to RM 41.1 million, according to figures released on Thursday.

On a year on year basis, the company's three radio stations Hot FM, One FM and Fly FM saw revenue growth while income for its television, print and outdoor media units declined in H1.

Local media reported that the last six months market environment had been "very challenging" for the media industry as a whole but that sponsorship revenue had helped radio see revenue growth.

Prem Shanker quits Fly FM show

Prem Shanker of Media Prima’s English station Fly FM has resigned as an on-air presenter.

He used to host ‘Prem On The Radio’ from 10 am to 4 pm on weekdays.

Born and raised in Klang - Malaysia, Shanker has hosted shows across different time slots for Fly FM and also works as a TV host and music deejay.

On Twitter, he describes himself as an unpredictable, loud radio jock who "dares to wear animal pants".

So far, Fly FM has not announced a replacement for his show.

Malaysian band films new video at Fly FM studios

Paperplane Pursuit, an independent Malaysian pop group, filmed their latest music video at the studios of Fly FM – one of the most popular English stations in the country.

The video for the song ‘Feel Good’, features Fly FM presenters Prem, Ben, Hafiz, Elizabeth Tan, Kuah Jen Han, Zher, Guibo and Hit.

The band consists of lead vocalist John O, drummer Andrew Yap and guitarist Isaac Ravi.

They started in 1998 under the name Stop Sunday, changed it later to SilentScream and finally to Paperplane Pursuit in 2009.

Media Prima predicts a "challenging" 2014

Malaysia's Media Prima Berhad expects 2014 to be another challenging year for advertising revenue, the company's Managing Director told local media on Wednesday.

At a press briefing following the company's annual general meeting (AGM), MD Amrin Awaluddin said he hoped events like the FIFA World Cup, the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games and Visit Malaysia Year will help cushion the impact of any potential downturn.

The company says it is confident that it will remain resilient and achieve continuous growth in FY 2014, reported the New Straits Times.
