Singapore radio DJ loses cancer battle

Former Lush 99.5 FM Singapore DJ Kate Reyes died on Saturday after a battle with breast cancer, according to local media.

Reyes, who was 41, first started working with Perfect 10 (now 987FM) at the age of 21 and also worked with Gold 90.5FM and Heart 91.3FM before joining Lush 99.5FM in 2010.

She was married to DJ Glenn Ong for two years, before they separated in 2001.

After quitting radio, Reyes had set up a jewellery store which specialised in jade designs.

Gold 90.5 FM DJ Vernetta Lopez, who knew Reyes since she was 17, remembered her on a Facebook post saying: “Her spirit was always so strong that it just seemed nothing could ever whisk it away. And for those who knew her, it never will be gone.”

Former colleague and Kiss 92 FM DJ Claressa Monteiro told the Straits Times: “She was generous with her experience and free with her guidance.  She gave completely and unreservedly. It’s what made her such a great DJ, what made her such a great person.”

Kiss 92’s Assistant Programme Director, Maddy Barber said: “I’m privileged to have worked with her and call her friend in the last years before she passed.”

Georgina Chang, Vice-President English Programming (Music) for Radio, MediaCorp, who had worked with Reyes at Perfect 10 said she was shocked and saddened to hear the news.

“Kate is one of those rare talents blessed with a beautiful voice. The radio community is stunned at the loss,” Chang added.

According to Channel News Asia, a two-day wake was arranged for Reyes and her funeral will be held on Wednesday.
