Staff of private radio and TV broadcaster Tolo were hit by a suicide attack in Afghanistan on Wednesday evening.

Tolo is one of the most popular television stations in Afghanistan.

It is a part of the Moby Group, the largest media company in Afghanistan, which owns Tolo TV, TOLOnews, Arman FM and Arakozia 90.3 FM among other media outlets in the country.

‘Tolo’ means sunrise or dawn in Dari and Pashto, and symbolises the beginning of a new era for Afghans.

TOLOnews is Afghanistan’s first 24-hour station dedicated to news and current affairs, broadcasting in Dari and Pashto.

It is known for its no compromise approach to news and current affairs and has had constant threats from insurgents over the years.

In Wednesday’s attack, seven people were killed and 25 were injured when a minibus carrying channel employees was struck by a suicide bomber near the Russian embassy.

According to a report in Pajhwok Afghan News, eyewitnesses said the attacker was on a motorbike and targeted the minibus in the Allauddin intersection area of Kabul on the Darul Aman road.

The blast was so powerful that it set fire to a building opposite the Russian Embassy.

No group has asserted responsibility for the attack, which came just two days after the second four-nation talks in Kabul aimed at reviving peace talks.
