UNESCO Director-General wants Philippines journalist’s killing investigated

UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova, has denounced the killing of Philippines radio journalist Maurito Lim and called on the authorities to investigate the case.

71-year old Lim was shot by a gunman in front of the station’s office earlier this month in Tagbilaran.

He hosted a weekly noontime show on dyRD radio was said to be critical of local officials linked to narcotics.

World Radio Day: give women 'a stronger voice'

Radio programmers were reminded to give women a stronger voice as the industry marked World Radio Day on Thursday.

The annual event which began in 2011 aims to celebrate radio as a medium.

This year, World Radio Day also had a second theme: to promote the role of women on air and to enhance the role of women within broadcast organisations.

World Radio Day to focus on rights of women

Gender equality and women's empowerment will be the theme for UNESCO's World Radio Day, which returns on February 13.

As well as promoting radio as a vital medium, the occasion will be used to call on stations to develop strong gender-related policies which eliminate stereotypes and promote the multidimensional portrayal of women.
