All ears on Sydney breakfast battle

The battle of the Sydney breakfast airwaves gets underway on Monday as market leading music station 2DAY FM launches its new breakfast show.

Last month, station bosses revealed they had picked a four-person team to front the show including Spice Girl Melanie B.

The three main anchors are well-known radio/tv presenters Merrick Watts and Jules Lund along with singer and actress Sophie Monk.

Scary Spice will take part on the phone initially from LA.

The vacancy was created when long-time morning show personalities Kyle and Jackie O announced they were quitting the Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) station.

They’ve since been confirmed as the new morning team at another Sydney station, which is being rebranded KIIS FM for their arrival next week by owners Australian Radio Network (ARN).

The pair have reportedly moved for million dollar contracts.

In Australia’s Daily Telegraph on Sunday, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson broke their silence about why they quit.

Sandilands told the paper he was bored at 2DAY FM and complained there was “no vibe” at the station.

Henderson said: “They really never thought we’d leave … never leave 2Day FM.” and said that station management had to “pull something together quickly”.

The comments come after derogatory remarks were made about the pair by new 2DAY FM host Watts and SCA boss Guy Dobson since they left.

The new foursome have a week’s head start on the household names they are replacing and industry insiders note that KIIS 106.5(which used to be Mix 106.5) has just 60 percent of its competitors audience share (Nielsen).

Some pundits predict that a four-person morning show will sound too busy, while others say Kyle and Jackie O will be lucky if they can take large numbers of listeners with them to KIIS.
