Bulgarian National Radio celebrates World Radio Day

On February 13, the two national and the nine regional stations of Radio Bulgaria celebrated the World Radio Day

For almost seventy years the world service of the Bulgarian Radio, formerly called Radio Sofia but now renamed Radio Bulgaria, has been presenting the country’s cultural and national identity to the world. It is a principal source of information from and about Bulgaria for millions of listeners outside its borders.

Following the theme for this year’s event, diversity in its newsroom and in its audience was represented through programs all day long.

The station shall started with an audio portrait of “Diversity united in one program”, then it focused on the professional development and the place of its listeners from the minorities, those with disabilities or with different sexual orientation in the society.

At the end their was a special outdoor studio broadcast dedicated to the diversity as an essential principle of the contemporary East European underground art.

On the eve of the World Radio Day the Bulgarian National Radio also held its annual Sirak Skitnik award ceremony where radio journalists are recognized for their significant contribution to the development of the medium. 

The 2019 Sirak Skitnik grand award was bestowed on the BNR Programme Director Martin Minkov.
