Coming soon: Rail Radio on 1000 Indian Railways trains

Passengers on one of the world’s largest railway networks, Indian Railways, will soon be able to tune in to popular FM radio stations while travelling.

The state-owned enterprise is finalising arrangements to launch Rail Radio Service on about 1000 Mail and Express trains.

Along with popular music and entertainment the service will offer train-related information on an hourly basis as well as alerts in case of an emergency.

India’s Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had proposed to invite FM radio stations for providing train-borne entertainment through public address systems on trains.
Presently, only premier trains like Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi are equipped with PA system.

The ministry’s plan is to set up studios at Railway Board and all zonal headquarters to operationalise Rail Radio service.
