DRM showcases emergency warning system in India

An emergency/disaster warning workshop, showcasing the strengths of the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) platform, took place in the Indian capital New Delhi on Wednesday.

Attendees included executives from public broadcaster All India Radio (AIR),  media consultants and radio listeners.

AIR is transitioning to digital radio by 2017, according to the organisation’s website and already uses the technology for its international shortwave services.

Transmissions are also being tested domestically.

DRM allows near FM quality reception on lower quality bands (AM and SW) along with data services including emergency warning messages.

Several DRM experts were on hand to explain the technology.

The workshop moves to Chennai in Tamil Nadhu state on Thursday.

DRM Chairman, Ruxandra Obreja says: “After several workshops, presentations and trials in New Delhi we are excited to prepare for a big event in Chennai, in the south of the country, where live DRM signal is already on the air”.
