NHK marks third anniversary of Japan earthquake

Three years after the massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan, national broadcaster NHK has run several programmes showing how the tragedy unfolded.

On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake left almost 16,000 dead, 6000 injured, 3000 missing and triggered the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

To mark the anniversary, NHK aired features about how local communities coped following the disaster and the subsequent reconstruction efforts

On the anniversary itself,  a special program aired in 17 languages on NHK World Radio focusing on the children living in affected areas, people working on reconstruction and the current situation at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

In a special program ‘Spring Comes Again – Children of the Affected Areas Now’, local kids from Miyagi shared their thoughts and feelings as they looked to the future.

Since the earthquake, Radio Japan has been regularly focusing on the children of Miyagi, who drew pictures of their favorite landscape and memories around the theme ‘My Future Home’.
