One FM DJ to shave head for charity

Singapore’s ONE FM 91.3 breakfast host Mark van Cuylenburg, better known as the Flying Dutchman is about to shave his head for charity.

The Singaporean presenter, who is 62 and of Dutch heritage, was exempted from National Service and wants to salute all the men who have done their part or will be going through the National Service, by shaving his head – a ritual that all Singaporean sons would have gone through before becoming men in green.

His only condition was that he would shave for $10,000 for the Straits Times Pocket Money Fund (SPMF).

The fund provides pocket money to students from low-income families, with per capita gross monthly income of $625 and below, for them to buy food during recess and pay for other school-related expenses.

The SPMF helps about 10,000 students a year.

Incidentally, he has more than doubled the amount he was asking for, thanks to a $20,000 donation from Bengawan Solo. The total collected was $27,550 on May 17 and he will shave his head at an event on June 2.

SPMF general manager Tan Bee Heong said: “This is an exemplary example of how anyone can be involved in helping others with simple fund-raising ideas, garnering support from friends and partners, and challenging others to step forward to make a difference.”
