Philippines: Community radio broadcaster seriously wounded in shooting

A community radio commentator in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur, Philippines, was seriously wounded after he was shot multiple times by unknown assailants last Wednesday.

Julito “Paka-paka” Orillaneda, 35, owner and operator of DXJB FM, was on his way home from the station when he was attacked.

According to local reports, the shooter escaped on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice.

His colleagues in the local broadcast community described Orillaneda as a hard-hitting radio commentator and a staunch critic of the local government.

So far, the authorities have not identified or apprehended the assailants.

Orillaneda was the sixth radio commentator attacked by gunmen in Surigao del Sur since 2009, out of which four were killed.

Among the victims were Godofredo Linao Jr. who was killed in Barobo town in July, 2009, Datu Roy Quijada Gallego in October, 2011 in Lianga town, Michael Milo in December, 2013 in Tandag City and Apolonio Suan , a provincial board member who hosted a radio program over Real FM in Bislig who was shot on board his van in July, 2016.

The Philippines ranks fourth on Committee to Protect Jounalists’ (CPJ) Impunity Index, a global measure of countries where journalists are slain and the killers go free.

More journalists have been killed in direct relation to their work in the Philippines than anywhere apart from Iraq and Syria since CPJ began keeping detailed records in 1992.
