RTHK ‘Cube’ app plays to niche music lovers

RTHK is promoting some of its best-loved niche music shows on what is described as the first ‘Cube’ app for the iPhone.

Although listeners have plenty of options to listen to pop music, several other genres including jazz and classical music are under-represented in mobile apps, says the Hong Kong broadcaster.

The ‘Cube’ allows listeners to hear music from several RTHK Radio 4 programmes including ‘Collage’, ‘Music 101’ and ‘Just Jazz with Uncle Ray’.   The collections have been personalised by RTHK presenters.

Users can search for particular tracks and educate themselves with the detailed audio descriptions provided about each piece.

All RTHK radio stations are also streamed through the app, which comes in English and Chinese.

The shows featured on the ‘Cube’ app are:

“Collage”

Six Radio 4 presenters: Daphne Lee, Jenny Lee, Tina Ma, Calvin Lai, Raymond Chung and Kathy Lam bring a variety of musical subjects – composers, performers, works, instruments, stories etc. to suit different music lover’s tastes.

“Music 101”

Created especially for music lovers who would like to explore the world’s greatest masterpieces of all time. 101 of 1001 pieces of music were specially selected by music expert Synthia Ko.

Jazz lovers can listen to Uncle Ray’s best-loved tracks in different moods performed by great jazz masters such as Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker.
