On stage I had costumes, co-actors, lights but on radio I just have my voice: Red FM’s RJ Devaki #IRFradiofest

As part of this year's International Radio Festival in Malta, personalities from many countries broadcast live from the IRF studio.

One of those was Red FM's RJ Devaki, who told listeners how she won an RJ competition fifteen years ago to get her job and let them in on some secrets of success for becoming a radio jockey.

“I speak to one person, that person knows that I am speaking only to them, that makes them feel at home…

“India needs people who connect… in this virtual world we have a maximum need for others.”

Devaki was an actor before she went into radio. Talking about the difference between film acting and radio she emphasised the personal connection:

“I used to think radio would be easy because I just have to speak. On stage I had costumes, co-actors, lights…

“But on radio I don't have those things so I just have to create the magic just with my voice because this is theatre of the mind.”

RJ Devaki's morning show was awarded as The Best Radio Show Of Gujarat at the India Radio Forum in 2015. Recently Devaki was also awarded as the voice of Ahmedabad by the Governor of Gujarat.

Not forgetting her Bollywood dance moves, Devaki and her Red FM colleague grabbed British DJ Carly Wilford and put on an impromptu show for the audience at the festival while on air
