They are our future: Children’s Radio Workshop in Kuala Lumpur

“Children’s radio is so important, it’s our future,” said Rizmy Aishath from PSM Maldives.

Aishath was part of a group of broadcasters in Kuala Lumpur this week for a workshop on Children’s Radio Programming.

“As Maldives is a small country we don’t have a specific Radio channel for kids. Yet we have specific programs dedicated for them. Because we want to give importance for them. We want them to be educated, informed as well as entertained. Every child is special and important.

“We want them to show their talent, have fun, enjoy their childhood and make their childhood a memorable one. Apart from this we believe they are the future of our country. Today as adults we want to be their role models which they can benefit for tomorrow. We want every child in country to be self motivated, brave, informative, clever, intelligent and confident. Therefore in every program we aim to give equal opportunities to each and every child.”

Titik Renggani from RRI Indonesia said:“Children’s Radio in my country is a success, because our radio station, Radio Republik Indonesia, Yogyakarta, always invites students from their school to exhibit their talent via radio.”

“The content of the programs are Javanese culture by the children. The teachers always support and prepare the best for this program, too. Everyone can easily hear the program.”

The workshop is organised by the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union, and is being run by AsiaRadioToday’s Steve Ahern.

Part of the workshop was to learn new tools for producing content and connecting with audiences through social media. To practice their skills with the new tools, a sample of workshop activities was videoed using mobile devices and apps, as part of the practical learning exercises.
