World Radio Day to focus on rights of women

Gender equality and women’s empowerment will be the theme for UNESCO’s World Radio Day, which returns on February 13.

As well as promoting radio as a vital medium, the occasion will be used to call on stations to develop strong gender-related policies which eliminate stereotypes and promote the multidimensional portrayal of women.

UNESCO is hoping to enourage station’s to help girls and women – where opportunities are currently limited – to learn the skills to be top producers, hosts and reporters.

World Radio Day also aims to improve international cooperation between broadcasters and to ensure people even in the most remote parts of the world have access to information and freedom of expression on the airwaves.
