World Radio Day in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Development Journalist Forum (SDJF) is collaborating with Parthia Media Network (PMN), International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP), Centre for Unity Through Education (CUTE), Independent Citizen’s Voice, Sri Lanka Unites  and MRTC – a media training Centre which functions under the University of Jaffna, to mark World Radio Day (WRD) on February 13.

United Nations General Assembly formally endorsed its proclamation of World Radio Day formally on the January 14, 2013.

UN General Assembly, during its 67th Session, endorsed the resolution adopted during the 36th session of the UNESCO General Conference, proclaiming February 13 as World Radio Day.

SDJF was amongst the organizations that supported the proposal to proclaim WRD.

This year, the partners have agreed to create a dialogue on the role of Radio in prompting diversity under the global theme ‘Radio is You!’.

SDJF is inviting its partner organizations to create awareness amongst emerging radio practitioners as to how innovative use of digital technology and Radio can address issues affecting reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

Each organization under this collaboration will launch an individualized campaign that would include meetings, gatherings, social media based promotions and discussions with their respective networks specifically on radio for diversity.

SDJF is also inviting webcasting media, university students, and its members to participate in a one-hour radio broadcast, to be produced by Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) to discuss WRD. Simultaneously, it is joining up with media students from the University of Jaffna through Skype and discussing ‘The role of Radio in Promoting Diversity’ under the guidance of Dr. S. Raguram, Coordinator of Media and Communication study unit.

Yes101, an English radio station, is celebrating WRD by giving two listeners a chance to host its breakfast show ‘Morning Fix with Dom & Asanka’.

The audio and video of the show will be also be streamed on the station’s social media platforms.
